Business Research: Competitors

Finding a Company's Competitors

You can find a company’s competitors in the following databases:

Business Insights: Global

Login to Business Insights: Global.

Hover your mouse over the Companies link in the menu bar toward the top of the database’s home page and then select Company Histories from the resulting drop-down menu.

Use the search box on the left-hand side of the page to enter a company’s name.

Toward the end of the company’s history you’ll find a section titled “Principal Competitors.”

Business Source Complete

Login to Business Source Complete.

Click on the More link from the blue menu bar toward the top left-hand corner of the database’s home page and then click on Company Profiles from the resulting drop-down menu.

You can then enter a company’s name in the search box or browse to find its MarketLine or Medtrack profile.

Profiles will generally include a section titled "Top Competitors" or something similar.

Hoovers

Login to Hoovers.

Enter a company’s name in the “Search for a Company” box at the top of the database’s home page.

Competitor information can be found in the menu bar on the left-hand side of the company overview page, below the "Advanced" heading; see entries for "Competitors," "Closest Industry Peers," and/or "Closest Companies."

Mergent Online Database

Login to Mergent Online.

Enter a company’s name in the "Company Search" box on the database’s home page.

Competitor information can be found on the "Competitors" tab toward the top of the company summary page.

Nexis Uni

Login to Nexis Uni.

Click on the Menu link in the upper left-hand corner of the database’s home page and then on Company Dossier.

Enter a company’s name in the "Company name" search box and click on its name on the results page.

Competitor information can be found by clicking on the Company Information link on the left-hand side of the company snapshot page and then on the Competitors link from the resulting sub-menu.
