Privacy Policy

The UMGC Library aims to provide access to resources and services in a manner that respects the privacy and dignity of all users. The Library’s policy was informed by the UMGC Privacy Policy and adheres to the principles of the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics. The sections below explain the UMGC Library’s policy and practices regarding the collection and use of patron information.

Collection of personal information

Patron information is collected to provide access to UMGC Library resources and services. Information collected includes, but is not limited to:

  • Name
  • E-mail address
  • Student/employee ID number
  • Computer system information (e.g., IP address, browser type, operating system)
  • Details of interactions with library staff (e.g., e-mail messages, chat transcripts)

Use of personal information

The UMGC Library does not sell personal information or data. Unless required by law or by contract, or unless there is reason to believe that violations of law or of UMGC policies have taken place, the UMGC Library does not disclose personal information to third parties.

All information relating to a patron’s use of the library and its resources and services is considered confidential. This information includes, but is not limited to, reference questions asked, database searches, interlibrary loan transactions, and circulation records.

Those who use the UMGC Library’s services may be asked to complete a survey to assess the quality of service experienced or to otherwise provide feedback regarding the Library. Survey respondents may choose to provide contact information if they wish to be contacted regarding their responses. Any identifying information provided by survey respondents will be removed before their responses are shared either internally or externally.

External sites

The UMGC Library’s website links to databases and other resources that are not under the control of the UMGC Library. The UMGC Library attempts to protect user privacy in contracts and agreements made with external providers, but users are encouraged to read the privacy statements of providers to learn how their personal information may be used.
