Library Module for MGMT Students

Develop a Topic

Whenever you have not been assigned a specific research topic, you will need to select one yourself. Here are some suggestions for developing a topic:

  • Brainstorm -  Write down ideas that come to mind.
  • Draw on classroom materials: Textbooks, modules, and class discussions.
  • Use personal or work experience.
  • Consult background materials such as reliable, authoritative websites, and subject encyclopedias.
  • If you are not sure whether your topic is appropriate for college-level research, ask your professor for guidance.

See the Background Materials for MGMT Classes Box below.

Use the ebooks below to find background information on your research topics. You can also use these resources to find helpful terms that you can use when searching the library's databases for additional information on your research topics.

Subject encyclopedias, such as the titles included below, are specialized resources written by experts in their field. They serve as excellent sources to gain a better understanding of management. Although subject encyclopedias are excellent sources of background information, some course instructors may prefer that you not cite any encyclopedia in the reference list of your research project; they may prefer that you use only peer-reviewed journal articles as sources for your assignments. If you are not sure whether an encyclopedia is an appropriate source to cite for a given assignment, please ask your course instructor.

Tip!

If you are having trouble finding information, you might need to switch - or adjust - your topic. It is a normal part of the research process to tweak your topic as you gather information and gain new insights.
