Searching the Library for Fermentation Articles

Here are a few sample searches that you can use yourself, or use as a model for creating your own keyword searches:

ferment* AND kimchi AND health*

That search tells the library database that you want to find articles that contain all of those keywords.

Note that by using the * symbol at the end of a word, we tell the database to find articles that contain that keyword plus alternative endings for the keyword--so the database will look for ferment, fermented, fermenting, fermentation; we also told the database to search for health, healthy, healthful.

We can also expand the search by using OR along with AND. Note that when we use OR, we place the keywords linked by OR inside parentheses. The parentheses tell the database to carry out our search in a logical order:

ferment* AND kimchi AND (health* OR digest*)

As you can see, it's the same search as before, but this time, by using OR, we are telling the database to find articles that are about fermentation, kimchi, and health, or that are about fermentation, kimchi, and digestion.

Here are a few other sample searches you can use, and a video showing you a search like this in a library database.

  • ferment* AND "mental health"
  • ferment* AND kombucha AND (health OR digest*)
  • ferment* AND probiotic* AND (health* OR digest*)
  • ferment* AND child* AND (health* OR digest*)
